Chief Justice Marianne Rivoalen was appointed Chief Justice of Manitoba on May 31, 2023 after having previously served as a judge of the Federal Court of Appeal from September 20, 2018 to May 30, 2023; Associate Chief Justice of the Manitoba Court of Queen’s Bench (Family Division) from May 22, 2015 until September 19, 2018; and a judge of the Manitoba Court of Queen’s Bench (Family Division) from February 2, 2005 until May 21, 2015.
She received a Bachelor of Arts degree (Latin-Philosophy with a concentration in mathematics) from the Université de Saint-Boniface in 1984 and a Bachelor of Laws degree from the Université de Moncton, New Brunswick (common law degree en français) in 1988. She was admitted to the Manitoba Bar in 1989.
Prior to her appointment to the Bench, Chief Justice Rivoalen was Senior Counsel and Team Leader with the federal Department of Justice’s Aboriginal Law Services Group, where she was responsible for its lawyers in Manitoba handling Indian Residential School Litigation. Before that, from 1988 to 2003, she had a broad litigation and advocacy practice in both official languages with two large Winnipeg law firms.
