David Joanasie was re-elected in the general election held on October 30, 2017, to represent the constituency of South Baffin in the 5th Legislative Assembly of Nunavut. The constituency includes the communities of Cape Dorset and Kimmirut.

Mr. Joanasie was elected to serve on the Executive Council during the November 17, 2017, proceedings of the Nunavut Leadership Forum. Minister Joanasie was formally sworn into office on November 21, 2017. He serves as the Minister of Education, Minister of Culture and Heritage, Minister responsible for Nunavut Arctic College and Minister of Languages.

David Joanasie previously served in the 4th Legislative Assembly. Mr. Joanasie served as Co-Chair of the Regular Members’ Caucus and as a member on the Management and Services Board.

Prior to his election, Mr. Joanasie held the position of Communications Manager of the Qikiqtani Inuit Association. Mr. Joanasie’s professional career also includes positions with the Government of Nunavut’s Department of Culture, Language, Elders and Youth and the Inuit Tapiriit Kanatami.

Mr. Joanasie holds a certificate in business communication from Saint Mary’s University and a diploma from Algonquin College. Mr. Joanasie attended the Nunavut Sivuniksavut program in Ottawa.

Mr. Joanasie has served on Sport Nunavut’s Mission Staff and participated in the Northern Youth Abroad Program. Mr. Joanasie is a past member of the Board of Directors of the Tumikuluit Saipaaqivik daycare.

David and Emily Joanasie have four children: Sayri, Cynthia, Qulittalik, and Pittaaluk. Mr. Joanasie’s personal interests include hunting, fishing, hockey, travelling, traditional land activities and Inuit language multi-media projects.
